Capturing moments that feel surreal

There’s something to be said about the feeling of dreams. The good ones, that is. The surreal, in-between state where time fades. But that feeling doesn’t always happen when we’re asleep. It’s about perspective — those rare moments when reality softens and the world around you feels like one straight out of dreamland. To capture this feeling, The Flow Trip invited a few photographers and digital artists to share a moment with us that felt like a dream.

Jeffrey Kieffer

My most dreamlike state…Overlooking the waves from a quiet cabin on the coast of Chile. Mesmerized by their rhythm, with nowhere else to be. The sound of the ocean, cool mist on my skin. Admiring how the light fades as day softly turns to night.

There’s a dreamlike quality to being underwater, feeling almost weightless, surrounded by the sounds of playful bubbles and deep bass of the currents. Nothing commands more focus than a 12-foot-long predator emerging from the distant blue, but the feeling this shark inspired was one of awe and respect, not primal fear.

Big Sur has long been my muse, a place that feels untouched by time. I’ve returned to photograph this cove for years, and its softened lavender light and quiet horizon still create the same rare stillness — standing there, I feel suspended between earth and imagination, inside a landscape lifted from an old book.

To me, the sky is a canvas and Mother Nature is the artist. Usually, we are just spectators, but once in a 'yellow' moon, the birds and moon align so perfectly they provide the ultimate inspiration. In that moment, the world felt less like reality and more like a carefully painted dream.

I walked along the winding path as the forest faded into fog. The trees stood still, softened by the mist, and the world felt distant and quiet. In that stillness, I felt completely present, drifting somewhere between clarity and dream.

Theo Quenee

When I am in the water with these gentle giants, their calmness is contagious. I stay still, my breathing slows, and I try to match their energy. It reminds me how fast our lives tend to be and how important it is to find moments of rest. Not only physically but mentally.
